The King Is Dead, Long Live The King! Baseball's most storied record fell last night, just as it has fallen before. Sports pundits and guys drinking beer for the most part are making the "Barry took steroid" jokes and comments, fans in S.F. don't care they are so happy to have a Giant do something that looks like professional baseball this year. I heard a telling quote last night on ESPN, John Kruk was asked his opinion and in the course of his acknowledging the record falling he said that if every player disappeared from the field who had used steroids during the "Steroid" era their wouldn't be enough players to field a game. Not an exact quote but an accurate paraphrasing. At work today I will take much ribbing from my very good friends because my affection for Barry is a soft spot that my buddy's like to poke quite often.
Here is what I know, Barry Bonds like many players never failed a steroid test, partly because it was not against the rules of baseball at the time and testing for it was weak at best. Believe me the Commissioner, the Owners and the Players Union all knew, but they did not want to know. Folks, it is part of the game, it does not deserve any kind of asterick or notation. Baseball is evolutionary, from lowering the pitchers mound, to expansion, to smaller ballparks to supplements it all part of our evolving national pastime. The players love the game to make money and a living, the owners love the game to make money and be prominent. The fan's love the game because it is the game. There is nothing better than being there. The smell of the grass, the beer, the hotdogs and the atmosphere.
I am a Giants fan, I am a Barry Bonds fan, and today I am at peace. I know he did it the only way he could, The King Is Dead, Long Live The King.
